Leah Staley Talks Hot Power Yoga

Describe your first Hot Power Yoga class experience as a student.

LS: The very first yoga class I ever attended was a 90 minute hot power class. I practiced for about 15 minutes and then took a 75 minute nap on my mat. It was great! I went back the next week and practiced for 30 minutes and took a 60 minute nap. Baby steps!! ;)

Describe your first Hot Power Yoga class experience as an instructor.

LS: Considering it was the first class I ever taught, I was super nervous!! But hot power is my jam – it's totally my happy place! Whenever I'm stressed or nervous, connecting strong, controlled breaths with the fluid movements in a hot power class helps me process what I'm feeling and clears my mind. It was an amazing experience to harness the clarity and peace that I receive from practice and channel it into something as nerve wracking as teaching my first yoga class!

Why would you encourage others to do Hot Power Yoga?

LS: You’ll never walk out of a hot power class thinking, "wow, I feel awful, I really wish I didn't do that!" It works your heart, lungs and all the muscles, plus you sweat out a ton of toxins.

What are your favorite poses from Hot Power Yoga?

LS: I have two. The first one is Chaturanga. I love this pose because, whether my knees are on or off the ground, it kicks my butt! When executed properly (elbows directly over wrists and bent to 90 degrees, hips the same height as shoulders), it's a powerful, full-body toning pose.

The second one is Savasana- It's that moment when you can't possibly give anymore, you're totally exhausted, and it's OK because all you have to do is lie there and melt into the floor. Despite my love for power classes, there's almost always one moment when a little voice in my head is asking "why in the heck would I willingly put myself through this? I must be crazy!" Savasana is the moment when I can tell that voice to shut it.

What is the benefit of Hot Power Yoga?

LS: What isn't the benefit?? It increases your heart rate, your metabolism, your circulation. It develops strength and flexibility while toning the whole body. It detoxifies the system through sweating.... just to name a few.
