Tara Morris Talks Hot Power Yoga
Tara Morris, RYT-200, fell in love with hot power yoga when she found instructors who acted as gentle guides rather than competitive coaches...those who allowed her to feel safe, non-competitive, strong and independent. She was on her own journey, and no one else in the room mattered besides her teacher's voice. Here, she answers some questions about the practice.
Describe your first Hot Power Yoga class experience as a student.
TM: It was a 90 minute class. I was 17 or 18 and went with my best friend. We had no idea what we were getting into and it was much more serious than we expected. The instructor, a woman, was tough and she glared at us as we laughed hysterically at each other! The class was crowded. I was flexible with no balance and she had balance and no flexibility. We definitely did not stay for svasana. Lol! It felt too competitive and so serious. I never went back.
Describe your first Hot Power Yoga class experience as an instructor.
TM: I was subbing a 90 minute class for Wade in the Ohiopyle community center. It was packed full of my friends. I remember feeling nervous at first. I lost the feeling of nervousness as I began to teach. It felt strangely natural. I was in love!
Why would you encourage others to do Hot Power Yoga?
It combines the powerful strength of the breath and body in order to access the flexibility of body while stilling the mind. It's meditative movement.
What are your yoga favorite poses?
Warrior II!!!! Handstand, Boat, Goddess, oh so many...
What is the benefit of Hot Power Yoga?
To balance strength with flexibility with external and internal warmth.
